Unity For Sisters Inc – Our Charity

The Building Nation Project

Unity for Sisters Inc is a registered non profit charity which aims to help Somali people in East Africa, inshallah. Our past programs have included famine relief and our clean child birth for Somali women project. I am here today to discuss our latest project. Also I am here today because we need all of you to complete this project.

Our next project is called ‘The Building Nation Project.’ This is a large project but step by step we can make a difference, inshallah.

The Unity For Sisters Inc team believes education builds a nation. People need knowledge to benefit them and this benefit will flow to the surrounding community, inshallah. Somalia at the current time has no system of education such as we have in Australia. And you may think this is not achievable for Somalia. Australia had to build the education system starting with one school, then a second, then a third and so on. This is Unity For Sisters Inc’s aim for Somalia, inshallah.

Save the Children foundation states regarding education in 3rd world and wartorn countries:

More than 43 million of these children are living in countries affected by armed conflict, where little is being done to help.

Millions more living in conflict-affected countries are receiving a substandard education.

These out-of-school children — like all children — have the right to an education. They, more than most, need the benefits education can bring:

  • protection,

  • stability,

  • and the potential to build a peaceful and prosperous society.

UNESCO the education wing of the United Nations states regarding education:

Millions of children around the world are deprived of the right to education. The result: One out of three children never see the inside of a classroom.

Starting with a school in Hergeisa named Maryam Bint Kamal International School we intend to build a school in all major centres such as Bosaso, Galkayo, Baidoa, Boroma, Kismayo and of course Mogadishu inshallah.

You may ask why do we choose major centres?

The reasons are as follows:

  • we need to find places which have high refugee populations

  • We need to build where there will be high population numbers generally as the schools will be self funding after the initial set up period, inshallah.

  • We aim to build schools for several hundred students, inshallah.

  • Somalia is a country with ability however they have not had an opportunity to be educated at a high standard. The educators in Somalia do their best with the facilities and knowledge they have and may Allah swt reward them for their efforts.

Unity For Sisters Inc has the following aims:

Our aim is for Somali children to be educated according to the western standards
Coupled with Arabic and memorisation of the Quran.
All of our schools will use Australian curriculum
Wherever possible Australian educated teachers will be employed.
Unity For Sisters Inc will also be training Somali teachers on the ground in Somalia to be facilitators of education using the Australia curriculum, inshallah.

What is our difference?

Our schools will be community schools and NOT a private business enterprise. All people will earn a wage including the directors. ALL PROFITS WILL GO BACK INTO THE SCHOOL WHERE THE MONEY IS DERIVED OR COMMUNITY PROJECTS IN THE SORROUNDING COMMUNITY, INSHALLAH.

All of our schools will follow the same curriculum. The benefit of this is if a student moves to another location where we have another school built the student will be able to resume regular education with ease.

Also if teaching staff want to relocate and if positions are available they will be able to transfer to a job in the new location with ease and with little or now training. Also another major benefit is the director of this specific project is a Somali born, Australian qualified educator named Mr. Kamal Sheikh-Omar. Mr. Sheikh-Omar has an extensive education including 8 years full-time university in Australia resulting in a Bachelor of Engineering and a Post Graduate Bachelor of Education majoring in Math & Physics. Although he earns excellent money and lives well in Australia with so much ease in regards to food, education and medicines he believes it is a must for him to give back to the country that made him the person he is today. Mr Sheikh-Omar will relocate with his family to complete his aim is educating Somali children and believes this will be a lifelong project.

We are looking at raising $100,000 which will cover the cost of buying land, building a school, building a library, kitchen, an office and prayer room. Also it will cover the cost of transporting all curriculums from Australia, employing teachers in the initial stages of the school.

Building a high quality school will encourage investment from other countries, and help build Somalia. It will allow the people who build them to earn money and the people who work in them to earn money. However the most important thing a school can give is putting hope into the heart of a child.
